Joan Koven's Biography
Joan Koven, founder and director of Academic Access, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Skidmore College and her certificate in College Counseling from UCLA. She holds a diplĂ´me from La Varenne Ecole de La Cuisine in Paris. Joan has spent most of her professional life as a manager, leader, marketing, and promotion executive. She worked for Bloomingdales, Crate and Barrel and Conran's as a store manager for over 10 years managing, hiring, and motivating a team of over 75 employees. Her most recent career of 14 years involved developing, coordinating, researching and executing marketing programs for Johnson and Johnson, Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, Quaker Oats, General Mills, and over 150 consumer packaged goods companies. Joan brings her talents to Academic Access in many ways. Her strength in pulling together a team of dynamic associates complements her expertise in organizing, marketing, and preparing students for a successful "Plan of Action" for college admissions. Her analytical and research skills ease the way for the student's entry into uncovering the colleges that are the "right fit" for each student. Joan has lived the university life as an academic spouse for over 25 years at Harvard University, University of California Berkeley, Villanova University and now Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Her academic family has given her first hand access to working with students and their specific needs. She has lived in London, Paris, New York, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Israel, and the United States. She is a member of National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC), Pennsylvania Association of College Admission Counseling (PACAC), a member of Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), and Higher Education Consultants Association ( HECA). Joan attends College Board Forums annually and has completed the IECA Principles and Practices Institute. She has met and interviewed admissions professionals and students on campus at over three hundred colleges and universities throughout North America. She devotes over twenty percent of her time to visiting college campuses.
